The Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh has announced its intention of expanding the metro rail network in the state and is said to have sent a detailed project report (DPR) to the Central Government for the introduction of services in Agra, Kanpur and Meerut.

The Chief Minister in an address to mark one year of commercial operations of the Lucknow metro said that a metro rail not only eased the pressure on roads but also acted as a status symbol for the city. Noting that there were apprehensions over the viability of the Lucknow metro, the Chief Minister said that ridership has stabilized and approximately 33 lakh people are said to have availed of metro services in the state capital.

The Chief Minister was also appreciative of the support extended by the Central Government stating that “We are getting positive support and guidance from the Centre for expanding the metro network in other cities.”

Uttar Pradesh currently has metro systems in Lucknow, Ghaziabad and Noida and is readying to expand its urban mobility systems as it faces a large and growing population, especially in cities.
