BySwarajya Staff

With the news of a pregnant elephant dying after being fed a cracker laced pineapple creating shock-waves, it has now been reported that another elephant had died in Kerala in a similar manner back in April.

As per a Press Trust of India report, forest officials in Kollam district had noticed a young female elephant detached from her pack in Pathanapuram forest range area. They noticed that the elephant’s jaw was broken and she was unable to eat.

As the officials approached her, she ran off to be with her pack but was again alienated from the pack. She was given medical treatment by the forest officials but unfortunately passed away.

The forest officials suspected that she suffered the gruesome fate after biting into cracker laced food.

“It is suspected that the elephant bit a food item filled with crackers and it exploded in her mouth. We are waiting for the postmortem report”, a forest officer was quoted as saying.

The officials though lament that investigation into such matters is a tough task as elephants are highly mobile creatures, which makes information gathering very hard.

An FIR has meanwhile been filed in connection with the death of the pregnant elephant in Malappuram which was fed a cracker laced pineapple. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has assured that strict action will be taken against the culprits.
