Kolkata: Owing To Sub-Par Implementation Of TRAI’s Best Fit Plan, Cable TV Subscribers Opting For DTH Operators

Under the Telecom Regulatory Authority’s (TRAI) new ‘Best Fit Plan’ which came into effect from 1 April, subscribers are noticing higher bill compared to the old tariff regime, especially those using Cable Television (TV) services.

Owing to the sub-par implementation of TRAI’s tariff regime, many cable TV users in Kolkata city are migrating to Direct To Home (DTH) operators for a better quality of service and more channel options, reports TelecomTalk.

According to the report, there were some reported incidents in Kolkata where the consumers were facing blacked out screens even after migrating to the new tariff regime. Further, some customers also complained about cable operators not providing the choice of a-la-carte channels and forcing them to go with channel packs. This reportedly pushed them to switch over to DTH operators.

This reportedly resulted in some of the cable operators in Kolkata churning out 10-15 per cent of subscribers, while some other operators churned out 20-25 per cent of subscribers.

As per the report, the cable operators, however, blamed the Multi System Operators (MSOs) for not conducting the migration process properly. They said that the websites of MSOs were crashing, and the process lacked smoothness, which annoyed consumers and the local cable operators (LCOs) had to bear the brunt.
