The results for the National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET), conducted annually by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), were declared on Monday, 4 June. The results have brought the city of Kota, in Rajasthan, once again in the limelight as 51 out of the top 100 scorers in the exam came from various coaching institutes in the city.
Further, five out of the top ten scorers overall have come from one coaching institute itself.
The town of Kota emerged as a centre for coaching institutes for engineering and medical entrance examinations from the 1980s. Since then, it has become a national centre for where lakhs of students head from all over India head every year to receive training. The latest results will add further credence to the ‘Kota model’.
However, with its stellar reputation in entrance exams, lately, the city has also become infamous for student suicides owing to the huge pressure teenagers have to face.
