The Telangana government plans to improve connectivity in its capital Hyderabad with a Light Rail Transit System (LRTS) from Kukatpally Housing Board (KPHB) to Narsingi and Kokapet.

This 25.40 km long corridor is being planned instead of the proposed 15 Km long Elevated Bus Rapid Transit System (EBRTS) from KPHB to Financial District.

The Hyderabad Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (HUMTA) is the nodal agency preparing the detailed project report (DPR) on LRTS in coordination with the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) and the Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL).

Official sources told The New Indian Express that the LRTS project would have about 24 stations. It will be integrated with KPHB Metro station, Hitec City MMTS, Raidurg Metro station, HMR Metro Phase-II and AEML near Narsingi.

Hitech city and Financial district areas of Hyderabad are home to numerous MNCs and areas like Kukatpally are home to one of the country’s largest residential areas. Thus if implemented, the LRTS would connect the important housing areas with the IT hub of Hyderabad.

Besides providing easy and comfortable travel to lakhs of professionals, the proposed LRTS would also boost the ridership of the existing Metrorail network in the city by bringing new areas in the reach of the public transport network.
