London University Bans Beef From Campus Food Outlets To Tackle Climate Crisis

A university in London has banned all the beef products from its campus in a bid to help the fight against climate crisis, reports CNN.

According to the report, the new chief of the Goldsmiths University of London has announced that the food outlets in the campus will not serve beef products as the institution aims to become carbon neutral by 2025.

The move will take effect from September, when the new academic year begins. Apart from the ban on beef products in campus, an additional 10 per cent levy will be added to the sale of bottled water and single use plastic cups in an attempt to discourage their use. The money raised through the additional levy will go towards a “green student initiative fund”.

Furthermore, the university will also be taking other initiatives including installation of more solar panels across its campus, planting trees and switching to a clean energy supplier in its efforts to become carbon neutral by 2025.

“Declaring a climate emergency cannot be empty words. I truly believe we face a defining moment in global history and Goldsmiths now stands shoulder to shoulder with other organisations willing to call the alarm and take urgent action to cut carbon use,” Professor Frances Corner, Warden of Goldsmiths, said in a statement.

According to the report, the beef is globally responsible for 41 per cent of livestock greenhouse gas emissions while the livestock accounts for 14.5 per cent of total global emissions.

Based at a campus in New Cross, south-east London, the university has a student population of around 10,000.
