BySwarajya Staff

Giving clarification over the issue of lotus symbol being printed on the new India passport raised by opposition members in Lok Sabha, Raveesh Kumar, the official spokesperson of Minister of External Affairs, said on Thursday (12 December) that it was part of the enhanced security features to identify fake passports, reports Times of India.

He also added that lotus is our national symbol and different national symbols will be used on rotation.

He further stated that, these security features have been introduced as part of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) guidelines.

Earlier, some members in opposition had raised the issue of printing lotus symbol on new Indian passports, terming the move as further ‘saffronisation’ of the country. The members also pointed to the fact that lotus is also the symbol of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
