Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) MLA from Gwalior Rural seat in Madhya Pradesh Bharat Singh Kushwaha on Wednesday (13 November) demanded that the state government take action against the rising number of cattle thefts in the region, ANI reports.
"A large number of cows and buffaloes are being stolen by unidentified hooligans in the area. The thugs intimidate the farmers at gunpoint and then take away the cattle, ruining their hard work," Kushwaha said.
Exhibiting the magnitude of the issue, Kushwaha said that around Rs 50-60 lakh worth cattle had been stolen from the representative himself, while handing a list of 25 such incidents to the local police.
Cow protection was among the Kamal Nath-led Congress government’s major poll promises during the 2018 state assembly elections. The government has now planned 3000 cow shelters in the state by 2020 and is also mulling an additional tax to fund one gaushala in every panchayat in the state.
