Make in India: Australia’s Sydney Metro Deploys Fully Automated Driverless Indian-Manufactured Trains

BySwarajya Staff

Marking a significant achievement for the Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi's flagship 'Make in India' programme, Australia's Sydney Metro has started running Indian-made fully automated and driverless trains, reports Business Today.

Sydney recently opened its first driver-less metro line which will be served by 22 such trains of six coaches each developed and manufactured by Alstom at its Sri City facility in Andhra Pradesh.

The last of these coaches was delivered by Alstom to Sydney Metro in December 2018 itself. These coaches are fully automated and hold attractive features like LED lightings, emergency intercoms, CCTV cameras, real-time travel information, double doors and more.

A point to be noted is that the trains exported from Andhra Pradesh based facility are equipped with the Urbalis 400 signalling system which minimizes the halt time at the stations as well as the time between multiple services. The coaches were integrated with the Urbalis 400 systems by Alstom's Bengaluru based engineering hub.
