Mamallapuram Temple Chariot Idols Go Missing

BySwarajya Staff

Teakwood idols worth several lakh rupees are reported to have gone missing from a chariot at a temple in Mamallapuram, 50 km from Tamil Nadu capital Chennai.

The Times of India reported that ten wooden idols that were recently detached from the chariot for renovation at the famous Sthalasayana Perumal temple in Mamallapuram have reportedly gone missing.

It is alleged that the idols which include that of a dwarapala, a horse and yaali-like creature among others, measuring around 7 feet each may have been smuggled out and sold to private collectors. Devotees alleged that a bronze bell, weighing 5 kg has also gone missing from the temple.

Temple authorities have lodged a complaint with the State Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department which has forwarded the complaint to the idol wing.
