The Rajya Sabha on Friday (1 August) passed the government’s bill to repeal 58 archaic central laws through a voice vote, reports The Economic times.
The development comes after the bill received the go-ahead from the Lok Sabha on 29 July. The government has emphasised that the laws have been repealed to move towards the idea of minimum legislation and maximum governance.
The bill was introduced in the Rajya Sabha by Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, following up the agenda from the previous Modi government. He also emphasised that repealing of laws is a continuous process.
Meanwhile, Rajya Sabha MP from Samajwadi Party (SP), Jaya Bachchan pressed for creating awareness among the people about repealed laws. She reasoned, "How are you going to communicate with people like me who are not aware of technical things. Otherwise there would be chaos."
