Modi Government May Implement Gujarat Model To Cut Private School Fees Throughout India

BySwarajya Staff

The Centre may implement the provisions introduced in Gujarat under the Self-Financed Schools (Regulation of Fees) Bill 2017 to make private schools in rest of the country affordable for all.

To implement the Gujarat model, Union Human Resources Development Minister Prakash Javadekar has asked for the details of the bill which was cleared by governor Om Prakash Kohli yesterday, CNBC Awaaz has reported.

According to the CNBC Awaaz report, private schools in Gujarat will be allowed to charge Rs 15,000, Rs 25,000 and Rs 27,000 respectively for primary, secondary and higher-secondary grades. Schools willing to hike the fee further will have to reach out to the Fee Regulatory Committee explaining the reason.

In a recent survey conducted by LocalCircles, over 15 per cent parents reported that the schools they send their kids to have increased fee by over 20 per cent.

“The fee increase in many schools has again been quite high this year and parents in different parts of the country have come on the roads to protest about it,” the survey said, adding that the “parents have also been complaining about the hefty increase in the annual fee charges which schools are not able to justify”.

Over 75 per cent parents, mostly from Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, West Bengal, Kerala, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Goa and Jharkhand, said that their children’s schools have raised the fee by more than 10 per cent.
