Modi Government Sanctions More Houses For Poor In 2.5 Years Than What UPA Managed In 10 Years

BySwarajya Staff

Moving swiftly towards fulfilling its promise of providing houses to all by 2022, the Modi government has sanctioned over 13.47 lakh houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY). This is more than what the UPA-I and II could manage to do in 10 years, under two different housing schemes.

Under Manmohan Singh, UPA-I and II sanctioned around 13,43,326 houses for the poor under JNNURM and Rajiv Awas Yojna. In its rule spanning over 10 years, UPA provided only 17,405 crore as Centre’s assistance to housing schemes. The NDA government, on the other hand, has approved a central aid of Rs 21,337 crore, according to a Housing Ministry official quoted by the Times of India.

While Uttar Pradesh has participated in the scheme for the first time, submitting proposals for 11,286 houses for the urban poor under the PMAY, Delhi remains the only state that has not participated.
