You Had To Pay Huge Sums Of Money To Become Vice-Chancellor In TN, But No More: Governor Banwarilal Purohit

Governor of Tamil Nadu Banwarilal Purohit has said that the corruption involved in appointment of Vice-Chancellors of universities in Tamil Nadu is a thing of the past as it has been eradicated. He added that he was contributing to the growth and change of the system and had ensured that appointments were now being given on the basis of merit, and not money.

He also said that he was earlier disheartened to know that huge sums of money were exchanged for appointments. Speaking at a conference in Chennai organised by Bharatiya Shikshan Mandal, Purohit was quoted by The Hindu as saying, “I could not believe that. Then, I decided that things have to be changed.”

He claimed that nine Vice-Chancellor appointments that he had made were purely based on merit and that no one could raise a finger at any of the decisions with respect to his appointments.

He opined that it took time to change the system, and that things looked better now than before. He said, “If you have got a college, select the best principal. Guide him and leave it to him. You will get the best results, I tell you. Give him the freedom.”
