SpaceX founder and chief executive officer (CEO) Elon Musk has said that if enough number of people want to make a trip to Mars, a ticket to the red planet and back may cost passengers less than $100,000, PC Mag has reported.

The SpaceX CEO, on Monday (11 February), offered his thoughts on how much consumers would have to save for the trip to Mars. Musk, responding to a query on Twitter, said he was confident the ticket could one day cost less than $500,000, and possibly even lower at $100,000.

“What are the estimated costs for tickets to Moon/Mars accounting for reusability?” a user asked Musk on Twitter.

“Very dependent on volume, but I’m confident moving to Mars (return ticket is free) will one day cost less than $500k & maybe even below $100k. Low enough that most people in advanced economies could sell their home on Earth & move to Mars if they want,” replied Musk.

According to the report, Musk had also offered some cost estimates for a Mars ticket in 2017. In an article in New Space, Musk said, “Assuming optimization over time, we are looking at a cost per ticket of less than $200,000, maybe as little as $100,000 over time, depending upon how much mass a person takes."
