Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad
These comments were made by Mohamad in context of the beheading of French history teacher Samuel Paty at the hands of a radical Islamist.
In a twitter thread posted soon after the news broke of terror attack in Nice, France, Mohamad also says, "Since you have blamed all Muslims and the Muslims’ religion for what was done by one angry person, the Muslims have a right to punish the French. The boycott cannot compensate the wrongs committed by the French all these years".
Mohamad also took on French President Emmanuel Macron by calling him "very primitive", "Macron is not showing that he is civilised. He is very primitive in blaming the religion of Islam and Muslims for the killing of the insulting school teacher. It is not in keeping with the teachings of Islam".
In response India started an economic boycott of Malaysia - especially of its palm oil industry which took a heavy toll on the nation.
Mohamad had subsequently announced that it won’t take any retaliatory action against India and its buyers began increasing sugar import from India in order to placate it.
