NaMo App Downloads Increased After Rahul Gandhi’s Attack On Prime Minister Modi Over Data Sharing, Says BJP

BySwarajya Staff

A day after Congress President Rahul Gandhi accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of giving data obtained through his NaMo App to “friends in American companies”, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has claimed that the downloads of the app increased following the Congress’ attack.

Accusing the Congress of unleashing bots to make “#DeleteNaMoApp” trend on Twitter, the party said “the popularity and downloads of Namo App only increased” and called Gandhi’s comment “amusing”.

“Today, it will be no different! We also take this opportunity to encourage Rahul Gandhi to download NaMo App to keep himself appraised of the good things happening in India,” the BJP said in another tweet.

Gandhi on Sunday targeted Modi after allegations surfaced that data from his NaMo app was being shared without users’ consent. The Congress President had also accused the media of “burying” the NaMo app data leak story.

He attacked the BJP after his party came under scanner over the alleged use of services of Cambridge Analytica, accused of harvesting Facebook data.

According to a government official quoted by Mint, the NaMo app is designed to ensure that users do not have access to any data other than their own.

“The data in no way is stored or used by the third party services. Analytics and processing on the user data is done for offering users the most contextual content,” the official told the daily, requesting anonymity.
