No Regards For Supreme Court Ruling? Shashi Tharoor Opposes Triple Talaq Bill In LS, Calls It ‘Unconstitutional’

BySwarajya Staff

The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2018 aka Triple Talaq bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha by Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, which was opposed by Congress Member of Parliament (MP) Shashi Tharoor. Both Prasad and Tharoor locked horns over the bill.

Shashi Tharoor claims that the bill targets a specific religion and that the bill was against the constitution. Prasad, on the other hand, said Supreme Court’s order to strike down the practice of talaq-e-biddat (instant triple talaq) needs to be implemented through law, as Muslim men continued to divorce their wives instantly on frail grounds, as reported by Indian Express.

Tharoor, in his stand, said that divorces could not be penalised.

The Lok Sabha today (17 December) was adjourned for nearly 50 minutes during the question hour due to ruckus caused over the discussion on Rafale issue.

The other vital bills which are supposed to be discussed in the Lok Sabha are the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Bill, 2016, the New Delhi International Arbitration Centre Bill, 2018 and the Consumer’s Protection Bill, 2018.
