The Election Commission of India (ECI) has served a show-cause notice to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) with regard to the alleged discrepancies in the donations collected by the party during 2014-15.
The EC has sought a reply from AAP asking why action should not be taken against the party for failing to follow its lawful directions, reported The Indian Express.
Referring to the CBDT report (Central Board of Direct Taxes), the EC stated that AAP had received a total of Rs 67.67 crore in donations which exceeds donations of more than Rs 20,000, individually. The party has only disclosed total income of Rs 54.15 crore in its audit.
Earlier this year, CBDT had pointed out discrepancies in the party’s actual and reported donations. This is in violation of the Representation of the People Act (ROPA), with specific reference to the provisions of Section 29 (C) of the Act.
Such a news comes after AAP has been embroiled in a row where the party has been accused of canvassing votes on caste lines.
