Permanent Campuses For New IITs, IIITs: HRD Ministry Warns States Of Strict Action For Failing To Allot Land

The Human Resources Development (HRD) Ministry had said that it will be adopting a zero-tolerance policy against states which fail to allot land for IITs and IIITs, and the technical education regulator AICTE has made it mandatory for new engineering colleges operating out of temporary campuses to shift to permanent premises within a span of two years, reports India Today.

The decision gains significance because as per the new norms issued by the AICTE, if any institution fails to comply with the directive and shift to a permanent campus within two years, it would have to reduce its intake of new students by 50 per cent with an extended two-year deadline.

The development comes after the Union HRD Minister Ramesh Singh Pokhriyal 'Nishank' had announced that his ministry would shift the centrally funded colleges like IITs and IIITs to other cities if the states did not provide campuses to these institutions in a stipulated time frame.

The latest decision was taken by the HRD Minister at a review meeting of the IITs, IIMs, NITs and the IIITs.
