Plan On To Build 28 Fishing Jetties Across India, Says Nitin Gadkari; Cost Estimated At Rs 4,132 Crore

Union Shipping Minister Nitin Gadkari has said that the government will construct 28 fishing jetties at a cost of Rs 4,132 crore. This decision will significantly benefit India’s fishermen community, reports All India Radio.

Four fishing harbours will be set up in Karnataka, six in Maharashtra, three in Gujarat, two in Odisha, five in Andhra Pradesh, two in Kerala and one in Goa.

Gadkari announced the setting up of these jetties while laying the foundation stone for a new fishing harbour at Kulai in Karnataka which will be completed by May 2022. It will accommodate 300 boats.

The Kulai jetty will be built at a cost of Rs 196 crore with New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) holding a stake of 45 per cent in the venture, the Union government 50 per cent and the Karnataka state government the rest five per cent. NMPT will entirely maintain the new jetty.

Employment Generation

When completed, Kulai harbour will provide direct employment opportunities to 2,300 fishers and generate 1,700 onshore employment opportunities. Also, indirect employment opportunities will be provided to 4,500 other people.
