PM Modi To Inaugurates Andaman & Nicobar Submarine Cable Project, Internet Speed In Islands To Increase 10 Times

In a major positive development, Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the newly completed submarine optical fibre cable project between Chennai and Andaman and Nicobar Islands today (10 August).

The project will ensure better connectivity to the archipelago and will enable the state-owned telecom sector behemoth BSNL to offer 10 times faster broadband speeds of upto 100 mbps to the people of the island, reports Times of India.

In addition to this, once the 2,312 kilometres long project is dedicated by PM Modi, BSNL will also increase the download limit in Andaman and Nicobar Islands by 20 times.

It is expected that the launch of the project is going to greatly enhance the communications and connectivity in the across the archipelago, while also bringing down the internet bills for the people in the region substantially. It is also likely to give a strong fillip to education, telemedicine, tourism and business in the region.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had projected the inauguration of the submarine cable project as Andaman and Nicobar Island turning "digitally independent."
