Prime Minister Modi’s ‘Vision For New India’ Is Helping Create Jobs In US, Says White House

Announcing Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the United States scheduled for 26 June, President Donald Trump's press secretary Sean Spicer has said that his "vision for a new India" is helping create more jobs in the US.

“US energy and technologies, including natural gas, are helping to build Prime Minister Modi's vision for a new India and creating thousands of US jobs in the process," Spicer told reporters during his daily White House briefing.

US-India trade has grown six-fold since 2000, from $19 billion to $115 billion in 2016, Spicer said, adding that the Indian economy is growing at over 7 per cent. He said that the two leaders were expected to set forth a "common vision" on expanding US-India ties. He cited fighting terrorism, promoting growth and expanding security cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region as shared priorities.

This statement, if it reflects the view of policy-makers in the Trump administration, will bring some relief for India. Experts have suggested in the past that Modi’s idea of “Make In India” would clash with Trump's policy of "Buy American, Hire American,” creating friction in the bilateral relationship.
