Protests Erupts Against Pakistan In PoK After It ‘Steals’ The Region’s Water For Its Power Project

BySwarajya Staff

People in Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) seem to have grown tired with the Islamic nation’s ways and have sought the route of dissent.

According to ANI, Muzaffarabad residents have taken to streets demanding stoppage of the water being diverted from Neelum river to Punjab province, in Pakistan.

The neighbouring country has been depriving the people of Muzaffarabad from getting the supply of water. The river is a lifeline for people living in the region. Through an elaborate scheme, the flow of the freshwater from mountains has been diverted to Punjab province, resulting in the drying up of the river, despite this being a monsoon season.

Crystal clear water coming from the mountains now appears to have become a stormwater drain, filled with sewage, because of the Neelum-Jhelum hydropower plant. Several residents have been travelling all the way from different parts of Pakistan, to join the protest.

The protest is aimed mainly at the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA), which generates electricity from PoK and supplies it further to other provinces in Pakistan. As a result of this, hour-long power cuts have been carried out in the region.
