In a major development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday (23 July) laid the foundation stone for Manipur water supply project through video conferencing, reports Hindustan Times.

Calling it a ‘Raksha Bandhan gift’ to women of Manipur, PM Modi said, “This project will give clean drinking water to Greater Imphal and 1,700 village in Manipur. It will provide a lifeline to these people.”

He further added that it will also positively impact the lives of women in as many as one lakh families in the state.

The PM underscored the project as an exemplary example of decentralisation as the project has been designed with the help of local panchayats and the people.

Notably, the Manipur Water Supply project, funded by the Shanghai based New Development Bank (previously the BRICS bank), is an important component component of the state government’s efforts to achieve the goal of ‘Har Ghar Jal’ by 2024.

The outlay for the project is around Rs 3054.58 and is designed to provide freshwater household tap connections to remaining households in the Greater Imphal Planning area, 25 towns, and for 1,731 rural habitations covering 2,80,756 households in 16 districts of Manipur.

The inauguration ceremony was also virtually attended by Manipur Governor Najma Heptulla, Chief Minister N Biren Singh and his cabinet colleagues.

“The Manipur Water Supply project will also generate employment for thousands of people,” PM Modi further added.
