A day before the verdict in disputed Babri Masjid demolition case by special CBI court in Lucknow, senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and one of the accused in the case Uma Bharti has said she would not seek bail and was ready to be hanged if found guilty.
Bharti has written a letter to BJP president J P Nadda which is dated 26 September, ThePrint reported.
The special CBI court is going to pronounce its verdict in the demolition case on Wednesday (30 September) and top BJP leaders including L K Advani are among the accused.
"I do not know what the Ayodhya judgement will be on 30 September but I will not seek bail," Bharti wrote in the letter while stating that she was proud of being a part of the Ram Mandir movement.
"I am proud of my participation in the Ayodhya movement. I have always said that even if I have to hang for being part of the Ayodhya movement, then that’s acceptable to me," she wrote.
She said taking a bail could lower the dignity of her participation in the movement.
The letter is dated on the day when Nadda announced his team of office-bearers and Bharti's name was missing from the list. However, private secretary Vishnugupta Vaidya claimed the letter had been written before that, as per the report.
"I do not know what the decision will be, but I will not take bail. Taking the bail will tarnish the dignity of my participation in the movement. In such circumstances, whether you would want to keep me in the new team or not, that’s for you to consider," she added.
She held the post of party vice-president in the previous team and also served as a minister in the first Modi government. However, she opted out of the General Election 2019.
