Push Towards Renewable Energy Now Cheaper: IIT-Hyderabad Start-up Develops Economically Priced Li-Ion Batteries

BySwarajya Staff

PuREnergy, an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Hyderabad incubated startup will be launching commercial lithium-ion batteries at the Renewable Energy Expo 2018 in Greater Noida, The Hindu has reported. The startup was founded in 2016 by Nishanth Dongari, an assistant professor in IIT Hyderabad.

“We are in discussion with defence laboratories for battery applications in tanks, missiles and communication equipment where they need to work under harsh environmental conditions, reduce weight by four times compared to lead-acid technology and deliver high discharge currents,” Professor Dongari told The Hindu .

The company has built lithium-ion batteries for Indian conditions and offers a lower total cost of ownership. The efficient thermal management system enhances the life of the battery by 50 per cent. The startup has also been known to build solar hybrid systems in the past.

The company’s products are currently available in 0.2 KWH to 500 KWH range. These lithium-ion batteries can be used for agricultural drones, automobiles, aerospace, electric autos & carriers, telecom, households, residential societies, data centres and industrial entities.
