Revered Digambar Jain monk, Muni Tarun Sagar passed away early morning today (1 September) after a prolonged fight with jaundice. He was aged 51 years and had stopped taking medication, instead opting for Santhara - a Jain ritual of fasting to death.

He breathed his last at 3 am at the Radhapuri Jain Temple in Krishna Nagar, New Delhi. Known for his ‘Kadve Pravachan’, he enjoyed a huge following even outside the Jain community, including political leaders. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP chief Amit Shah along with several ministers and state chief ministers condoled the revered monk’s demise.

Born on 26 June 1967, in Madhya Pradesh’s Dahoh district, he choose to live as a celibate at just 13 years of age. In 2016, he was invited to address the Haryana assembly, a move that had led to huge furore by several segments of the society.

Central minister Suresh Prabhu remembered his personal connection with the monk while Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal said that muni’s teachings will continue to inspire humanity.

Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan wrote that the monk’s nationalistic ideals will be remembered forever.
