Tej Pratap Yadav, the elder son of RJD supremo and currently jailed ex-CM Lalu Prasad Yadav, after filing a divorce petition on Friday, which sent shock waves across the country, opened up on Saturday about his ‘stifled’ marriage with Aishwarya Rai.

He spoke to reporters in Bodh Gaya, where he made a stopover on his way to Ranchi to meet his jailed father. When asked about his decision to divorce, especially when his father was in poor health, Tej said, "I had told my parents that I did not wish to marry at that moment of time. But nobody listened to me. Ours was a mismatch. I am a simple man with simple habits, while she is a modern woman, educated in Delhi and used to life in a metropolis. I have been living a stifled (ghut ghut ke) life. How long can one go on like this? ”

Aishwarya is the daughter of RJD MLA Chandrika Rai and granddaughter of Daroga Rai, chief minister of Bihar in the 1960s. The couple tied the knot in Patna on 12 May, reported Times of India.

Yadav also said he had not even spoken with his wife in the last few months. Rai was not immediately available for comment.

Yadav said he was not going to withdraw his petition, which is expected to come up for hearing on 29 November. His lawyer said that Yadav sought divorce on compatibility issues, invoking Section 13 A of the Hindu Marriage Act under which either spouse can unilaterally seek a divorce.
