The centre released Rs 2.08 crore worth of funds to the Punjab government to rehabilitate 1984 Sikh riot victims who migrated to the state, New Indian Express has reported. The centre had earlier set 8 November 2016 as the deadline for completing the disbursal of the relief for 104 victims.

The Home Ministry in a statement said, “One of the recommendations of the Justice G.P. Mathur Committee, which was constituted to look into the grievances related to 1984 riots, was to provide Rehabilitation package to the migrant families in the State of Punjab. The Committee report stated that there were 1,020 cases (72 cases verified and recommended for payment while 948 cases were still pending for verification) in which Rehabilitation Grant could not be paid as the scheme has been closed.”

The central government said that it could not pay the relief money in the absence of communication from the Punjab state government on the list of beneficiaries. Further, it said that the amount was being released as a list of 104 members were communicated to the centre by the state recently.
