One of the three men arrested in the Maldives following the bomb blast attack on the former president and incumbent Speaker Mohamed Nasheed is said to have links with Islamist extremists, reports Indian Express.

The Maldivian police is presently investigating the attack on Nasheed as an act of terrorism as per details shared by Maldivian police's chief Mohammed Hameed.

Following the attack, Nasheed sustained multiple injuries and has since undergone surgeries for the removal of shrapnel. His condition is said to have improved since and has therefore been taken off the ventilator.

It should be noted that Nasheed has been overtly outspoken against the growing influence of Islamist extremists in Maldives which has already seen between 300 -500 young Maldivians joining ISIS in 2014-15 to fight in Syria and Iraq.
