Swami Agnivesh Hospitalised After Mob Attack

Arya Samaj scholar Swami Agnivesh was attacked by an unruly mob yesterday (17 July), The Tribune has reported. He was slapped, kicked and verbally abused in Pakur town in Jharkhand, say reports.

Jharkhand Chief Minister Raghubar Das has ordered a probe into the matter.

Agnivesh was then taken to Pakur Sadar Hospital for treatment. Earlier in a press conference, he had accused the state government of acquiring tribal lands and providing it to corporates.

"As soon as I came out of the venue, BJYM (Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha) and ABVP (Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad) activists attacked me without any provocation. They alleged that I was speaking against Hindus," Agnivesh was quoted to have said.

Agnivesh has alleged that this was a pre planned attack. This incident came as shot in the arm for the Congress party which attacked the BJP government in Jharkhand. "What can we expect when the state government itself was patronizing the criminals and goondas," Congress party spokesperson is quoted to have said.

However, in a recent development, Jharkhand Urban Development Minister C P Singh has called Swami Agnivesh a fraud.

Another BJP leader Deepak Prakash, has also asked Agnivesh not to give provocative statements to stay in news and further said that there is no place for violence in democracy.
