Tamil Nadu: Sterlite Copper Unveils Six Public Welfare Projects Worth Rs 100 Crore In Thoothukudi District

Delivering on its commitment made during the National Green Tribunal (NGT) hearing last month (December 2018), Sterlite Copper, yesterday (11 January 2019), announced six projects of around Rs 100 crore for public welfare in the Thoothukudi district of Tamil Nadu, reports Deccan Chronicle.

These six projects will be in addition to existing Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) obligations of the company.

The six projects are, an innovative smart school meeting international standards; a multi-speciality hospital; clean water supply for 15 villages; a youth skill development initiative aimed at employment, sports and entrepreneurship programme; a female empowerment programme, and a project to plant 10 lakh saplings in the district.

The formal announcement of these projects was made at a function held at a Sterlite Township called Thamira-1, with the participation of Sterlite officials as well as village representatives.

Vice-president of Sterlite Copper, D Dhanavel, stated that four of the six projects would begin within the next three to six months, while the smart school and the multi-speciality hospital would commence operations within the next 16 months.

The projects were conceived taking into account suggestions of local villagers under the initiative ‘Ungaludan Naan, Ungalukkaga Sterlite’.

Responding to a question about whether these projects were a pre-cursor to the re-opening of Sterlite’s copper smelter plant in the district, Dhanavel stated that the initiative needn’t be looked at in relation to that issue, as it was part of the regular work which the company does as part of CSR.
