A massive effort has been mounted to rescue Sujith Wilson, a two-year old boy, who fell into an abandoned borewell in Nadukattupatti near Manapparai in Tiruchi district on Friday (Oct 25) .

Rescue operations which commenced last night continued has not yielded any results so far. Sujith, who was trapped 30 feet earlier, slipped to about 70 feet during the rescue operation.

Sujay was playing in front of his house when he is said to have slipped and fell into a seven-year-old borewell hole at around 5.30 p.m. It is not yet known whether Britto Arogyaraj and Kalamary, parents to the boy, were nearby when the incident occurred.

On being alerted, Fire and Rescue Services personnel from Manapparai, Salem and Namakkal rushed to the spot and commenced a rescue operation with the help of locals.

The rescue operation has been hampered with layers of mud getting deposited in the hole. Efforts were on to remove the mud and resume the process amid drizzle.

Tamilnadu Health Minister C Vijayabaskar, who is personally supervising the rescue operation, said all the government departments are working in an co-ordinated manner to rescue the boy.

”Through cameras, we are continuously monitoring the situation. Rescue operations are being conducted even without one minute delay. We faced setback when mud starting falling down because of the wet state of the mud. Already various methods have been tried to rescue the child. We tried using rope to pull the boy out. We also used the suction method that is generally used to pull the new born baby out of the womb. But all of them have failed so far,” he said.

Vijaybhaskar added that Sujoy is trapped in a well which has only a 4-inch diameter and the boy is in a position that is rendering it difficult to pull him out.

A tube was dropped into the borewell to supply oxygen even as an earthmover was deployed to dig a trench close to the borewell. Rescue workers hoped to reach the boy by digging a tunnel but the process was suspended apparently due to rocky terrain.

A team of NDRF from Arakkonam is also on its way to reach the spot to help the rescue operations. A medical team has been kept ready to treat the child after the rescue.

Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami is also said to be continuously monitoring the situation, while Ministers Vellamandi Natarajan and Valarmathi are at the spot along with Vijayabaskar.

A medical team has been kept ready to treat the child after the rescue.

Following the incident, Vellore and Theni district Collectors have instructed the officials to identify unused borewells and close them immediately.
