BySwarajya Staff

Uttar Pradesh civil aviation director Surya Pal Singh Gangwar said on Monday (9 September) the state government had escalated the land acquisition process for the construction of a full-fledged airport in Ayodhya, reports The Times of India.

The director also told approximately 280 acre land will be acquitted with the consent of the owners. “The Ayodhya administration has identified three villages around the existing air strip whose land would be acquired and the initial land acquisition proceedings have been completed,” Gangwar told TOI.

The government has released funds of Rs 200 crore for the land acquiring process to expand the airstrip size as it needs to be at least 2.5 km long and 45 m wide to operate large commercial flights. The current airstrip is about 1.5 km long and 30 m wide fit for the landing of small aircrafts.

The project aims at restoring the heritage of the temple, making it a tourism hub, and boost the town’s economy and the airport will be named after Lord Ram.

In February this year, UP cabinet passed a proposal to spend a total of Rs 640 on Ayodhya airport, and had already allocated Rs 200 crore in the second supplementary budget presented in December 2018.
