The broadcasting and DTH sector in the country went to a major revamp after the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India brought in the new tariff order (NTO) in April to ensure consumers only pay for the channels they want to watch.
However, due to subpar implementation of the regime causing a major disruption after several subscribers around the country started complaining of the increased television bills. Owing to this, it was expected that the subscriber base in India would decrease.
The study revealed that India had 183 million TV homes in 2017, and 197 million by 2018. However, number of TV homes reduced to 192 million in the first quarter of 2019 before striking up to 194 million after the NTO implementation.
