Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Jayant Sinha has stated that flying in India is cheaper than taking an auto if one stopped and looked at the cost per kilometre, reports Economic Times.

Elaborating further, the Minister said that while the cost of travelling in an auto rickshaw worked out to Rs 5/km, the corresponding fare for an airline was Rs 4/km.

The Minister was making the above point to highlight the affordability of air travel in the country which has also led to an aviation boom with the country having the fastest growing domestic aviation market in the world.

The country has witnessed a double-digit rise in passenger traffic over an extended period of 50 consecutive months on the back of increased flights at low costs.

However, Indian airlines are bleeding money despite the high passenger traffic and it has been estimated that combined losses across all airlines could be in the range of $1.9 billion.
