Twitter is all set to lose the intermediary status it enjoys in India following its failure to comply with the new IT laws. This means that Twitter will be directly and editorially responsible for all the posts published on its platform, ANI has reported.
Quoting government sources, ANI said that Twitter is the only mainstream social media platform in India which has failed to comply with the new rules.
As a result, in case a case is filed against Twitter over alleged unlawful content, it will be treated as a publisher and not an intermediary, which makes it open to prosecution under various sections of the IPC.
The Ghaziabad Police has also filed a FIR against Twitter and others over a video shared on the social media platform with the deliberate and malicious intention to foment religious discord.
The Ghaziabad Police has accused Twitter of “doing nothing to prevent the video from getting viral,” named the company, Twitter Communications India Private Limited, The Wire, as well as other individuals as accused in the FIR. The case was registered on Tuesday.
