The Karnataka transport commissioner, M K Ayyappa, has reportedly said in a meeting with Ola, Uber and a local cab association that carpooling services have to stop from Monday (30 January). State transport officials have said these services are illegal, reported FactorDaily.
According to the contract carriage permit, which regulates the operation of taxis in the state, cabs are only allowed to pick up a customer from the source point and drop them to their destination, with no additional pickups to be made during the trip.
This is an unfortunate development as people have come to rely on the cab aggregators’ carpooling services. According to the FactorDaily report, 25 per cent of all Uber trips since the start of pool services in Delhi and Bengaluru have been pooled.
