In a major push for the labour sector reforms, Prime Minister Narendra Modi led Union Cabinet on Tuesday (8 September) approved three labour codes on occupational safety, health and working conditions, and social security and industrial relations, reports Times of India.

With the Cabinet's nod, the path has now been cleared for the three codes to be taken up in the upcoming Monsoon Session of the Parliament which is set to begin on 14 September. It should be noted that the code on wages had already been approved by the parliament last year, while the three other codes were referred to the parliamentary standing committee on labour for further scrutiny.

Meanwhile, the code on social security is likely face resistance from Indian National Congress, DMK, CPI and CPM, who had in the past filed a formal dissent note on the Code on Social Security Bill, 2019.
