Three individuals from Pratapgarh in Uttar Pradesh have been arrested after a viral video showed a group of youths brutally assaulting a dolphin using sticks and axes.

The incident happened on 31 December and a video of the same, subsequently went viral on social media.

In the disturbing video the youths can be seen heartlessly attacking the dolphin as the latter mounted a futile struggle to try and break free.

The youths continued their assault on the poor dolphin despite it bleeding profusely. The injuries were fatal.

As per reports the dolphin strayed into a canal and it was reportedly mistaken by the locals as a 'deadly fish'.

"In the morning of the New Year, local people saw the dolphin moving in the water. Some said it was a 'deadly and poisonous fish' while others said it could kill people who went near it. A huge crowd collected at the spot and people decided that it would be dangerous to let it go. The crowds started beating the dolphin and some even hit with an axe," IANS quoted a source as saying.

It was reported in May that a Gangetic dolphin was tortured to death by a few men in West Bengal along the banks of the Hoogly river.
