Anxious moments awaited the district and police administration of Uttar Pradesh’s Aligarh after a dozen cow carcasses were recovered near Aligarh-Mathura road on Thursday (27 December), New Indian Express reported.

This resulted in tension gripping the town of Iglas after carcasses were dug up based on information provided by a local, who found the remains popping out on the surface. The report claimed that the cows were believed to have been buried alive.

Subsequently, a postmortem examination was conducted which confirmed that the cows died of asphyxia. It was reported that initially the locals started digging up the carcasses and only when they had recovered five, did the which police arrived at the spot.

The villagers claimed that one of the four bovines was alive when they recovered it, but died later. The authorities later employed an earthmover which resulted in seven more recoveries.

Both the District Magistrate (DM), Aligarh, CB Singh and SSP Ajay Kumar Sahni denied claims that the cows were buried alive. They stated that the cows were dead and buried two days ago and cited the postmortem report to back their claims.
