Clashes erupted between the police and the members of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) who were protesting against hike in electricity tariff, here on Wednesday (11 September), reports The New Indian Express.

The youth wing members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) also alleged the Mamata Banerjee government was involved in corruption in electric meter reading.

The police had to use water cannons and tear gas to disperse the protesters marching towards the Calcutta Electricity Supply Corporation (CESC) office in the Chowringhee square area of Kolkata. They were halted near the Chandni Chowk metro station.

“We were going to the CESC office when the police attacked our workers. We are fighting against the high electricity rates in the state,” a BJYM member told ANI. The news agency also shared a video of the clashes.

It is learnt that a number of protesters got injured in the clashes and were taken to the nearby hospital whereas some were taken into police custody.

The BJP, after winning 18 seats in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, is now aiming at the state assembly polls due in 2021 and is leaving no stone unturned in taking on the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government.
