Cricketers Moin Ali and Adil Rashid part of England’s World Cup winning squad which defeated New Zealand yesterday (14 July) in a dramatic encounter, were seen rushing away from the stage after the rest of the squad began their customary champagne celebration.
Both Ali and Rashid are followers of Islam which prohibits the consumption of alcohol. A video showing both jumping together in joy before rushing away from the stage went viral on social media.
The rest of the squad though continued their rapturous celebrations after winning their nation’s maiden world cup title.
This decision by Ali and Rashid was taken sportingly by the majority of social media users many of whom also respected the cricketers’ decision to uphold their religious beliefs.
In a subsequent press conference, England cricket team captain Eoin Morgan when asked about the team’s luck said, “I spoke to Adil (England leg-spinner Adil Rashid), he said Allah was definitely with us. It actually epitomises our team, quite diverse backgrounds and cultures”.
