Hyundai’s new front wheel drive Electric SUV Kona, has been launched in India today (9 July), NDTV Car & Bike has reported. This is the first Electric SUV to enter the Indian market.
Available in two variants, Kona and Kona lite - the latter being offered to Indian customers, boasts of a single charge range of 452 KM and comes with a brake horsepower of 131 bhp.
The lite version comes powered with a 39.2 kWh battery which powers a 100 kW electric motor capable of generating 131 bhp and a torque of 395 Nm.
Hyundai claims that the vehicle can reach 0-100 kmph per hour in just 9.7 seconds. The battery will carry an 8 year or 1.6 lakh km warranty. The vehicle too will get a 3 year warranty.
A full charge takes around six hours using a regular power socket, but using a fast charger 80 per cent charge can be achieved in just 50 minutes. Hyundai has promised to set up four fast charging centres in Delhi, Chennai Mumbai, Bengaluru.

As per Overdrive, the SUV has been priced at Rs 25.30 lakh, thus putting it in direct competition with ICE counterparts like Ford Endeavour and Toyota Fortuner. It will also have to compete with electric SUV MG eZS, set to be launched in India, later this year.
Globally, Hyundai has also launched a standard version with a 64 kWh battery which has a marginally higher driving range of 482 KM. It remains to be seen if it would be released in India in the near future.
