The Kumbh Mela - one of the most revered religious event for Hinduism commenced today (15 January) in Prayagraj on the holy occasion of Makar Sankranti, IANS reported.
The start of one of the world’s largest religious congregation was marked by devotees participating in Shahi Snan (Royal Bath) at the Sangam - a confluence of three rivers, Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati.
To reach the holy spot for Shahi Snan, lakhs of devotees including Sadhus from 13 Akharas walked on 22 pontoon bridges. As per a Times of India report, Prajaygraj Mela authorities expect 1.2 crore people to take the holy dip throughout the day. Throughout the course of the Mela which culminates on 4 March - Mahashivratri, about 15 crore devotees are expected to pay a visit,
To ensure proper facilities and arrangement for the devotees, the Yogi Adityanath government has built 1.22 lakh eco-friendly toilets, provided 500 shuttle buses, parking space for 5.63 lakh vehicles,11,000 sanitary workers, 100 central hospitals, 25 first aid posts and 10 health outposts.
Apart from the state government’s efforts, the Indian Railways will run 800 special trains to aid the pilgrims, apart from launching various other facilities like a mobile app.
