Yusuf Al-Qaradawi, the spiritual leader of radical Islamist outfit Muslim Brotherhood, died on Monday (26 September) in Qatar.

Al-Qaradawi was formally the chairman of the International Union of Muslim Scholars, a position he held for 14 years from its establishment in 2004.

He was born in 1926 in Egypt and has been living in Qatar since 2013.

More importantly, he was one of the fountainheads of the Muslim Brotherhood, an Islamist organisation that has been sanctioned and proscribed by Gulf states and many Western countries.

Cairo blacklisted the movement as a terrorist organisation in 2013.

An Egyptian court sentenced Al-Qaradawi to death in absentia in 2015 alongside other Brotherhood leaders.

Al-Qaradawi was imprisoned several times in Egypt over his links to the Muslim Brotherhood and accusations that he ordered the assassination of political figures.

Reporting on his death, Arab News said that Al-Qaradawi has left behind "a poisonous legacy of hatred and Islamic supremacy".
