CBI arrested Vijay Nair in Delhi liquor scam case.

Businessman and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) communications in-charge Vijay Nair has been sent to two weeks' judicial custody over financial fraud.

A special court in Delhi today (6 October) sent Nair to jail in a case related to financial irregularities found in Delhi government's new excise policy.

Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia is one of the accused in the case.

Special Judge M K Nagpal sent Nair to jail till 20 October after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) did not seek his further custodial interrogation.

The central probe agency produced Nair before the court at the end of his CBI remand.

According to the prosecution, Nair entered into a criminal conspiracy with others as part of which the excise policy of the AAP government in Delhi was framed and implemented.

The CBI had registered an FIR against the accused public servants, including Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, and other named and unnamed people under the relevant sections of the IPC and Prevention of Corruption Act.

According to the FIR, the accused public servants were instrumental in taking decisions about the excise policy without getting approval from the competent authority.

The intent of the accused was to extend undue favours to the liquor licensees for illegal pecuniary benefits, the FIR alleged.

The AAP continues to defend Nair in the matter and portray him as an innocent party volunteer.
