The Army Commanders’ Conference for 2024 is set to commence on Thursday (28 March), with a keen focus on reassessing deployment strategies in the Army’s Northern Command and advancing tri-service integration, according to officials familiar with the matter.

The conference, the first of the year, will adopt a hybrid mode, blending virtual and in-person participation.

“The conference serves as a pivotal forum for apex leadership of the Indian Army to brainstorm conceptual issues, review and assess the overall security situation. It will lay down key priorities facilitating important policy decisions to chart the course for future direction,” the army said in a statement.

Amidst the ongoing military standoff with China along the Line of Actual Control in the Ladakh region and a series of terror attacks in Jammu and Kashmir last year, deployment adjustments in eastern Ladakh and areas south of the Pir Panjal range in J&K will also be among the key topics under scrutiny.

The army leadership will also be addressed by chief of defence staff General Anil Chauhan, navy chief Admiral R Hari Kumar and IAF chief Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari.

The conference comes at a time when India and China are in talks to calm down tensions along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh.

Earlier, Indian and Chinese senior military commanders had concluded the 21st round of talks on 19 February 2023 where they agreed to continue the military dialogue and maintain peace, but there was no immediate breakthrough.
