BJP-Led North Delhi Civic Body Makes It Mandatory For Restaurants, Shops To Mention If Meat Is Halal Or Jhatka

The Bharatiya Janata Party-led North Delhi Municipal Corporation has cleared a proposal making it mandatory for restaurants and shops in North Delhi to display whether the meat being sold or served is halal or jhatka, reports Hindustan Times.

The proposal stated, “According to Hinduism and Sikhism, eating halal meat is forbidden and against religion. Therefore, this meeting resolves that this direction be given to restaurants and meat shops that it should be written mandatorily about the meat being sold and served by them that jhatka or halal meat is available here.”

Earlier, South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) passed a proposal making it mandatory for restaurants and meat shops to display whether the meat they are selling is halal or jhatka.

Also in January, after a social media drive by Hindus and Sikhs against the 'Halal' certification for products in the country, the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) which handles agri-exports from the country has removed the word 'Halal' from its 'Red Meat Manual'.
